I currently use the 2017 Steez A 7.1:1 reels for the majority of my Texas rig baits and jig baits. They have the stock spools in them. When considering a spool upgrade for these reels and applications....what have you folks done or suggest? Switch to a specific SLP Works spool or simply upgrade spool bearings on the stock spool?

absolutely great question and I think the answer will vary from person to person but not by much.
When I am "PLANNING", I am considering, rod , line , lure and what the goal is . For example the morethan reel is going on a X7 7'1 Aaron Martens rod and the purpose is for pitching. I have found lines like defier does better in a TWS reel than convential in my humble opinion. For this I have a morethan and I was wanting an sv spool because of ease and i would upgrade the bearing. The bearing upgrade is the least expensive and usually has immediate results and impact.
Im using 12lb test and 3/16, 5/16, 7/16ths and everything in between. The drag is smooth so I dont break off and I backed it off a bit as well. the lure will be beaver style baits or baby brush hogs so not alot of additional weight. I take all this into consideration when i am planning on modifications.
The Spool, in my experience different spools behave differently in various reels and you sometimes just have to learn that.. for example, a RCS 1016 spool is phenomenal in a variety of reels . Absolutely phenomenal. so I tend to used that spool for topwater stuff as line capacity is not an issue with that spool and I am using a co-poly line but if i were using braided line i would opt for a different spool. a G1 1016 spool is great in my TDZ and gives me line capacity and control when using jerkbaits, but so does a zpi M spool but the zpi pg spool has too much line and the M not enough so the 1016 sits in the middle for me..
So its alot to be considered but i just start with what it is I am looking to achieve from not only the reel but the whole setup. A reel that cast far serves little purpose on a flipping stick.
Lastly is cosmetics.
i got this spool for two reasons. one of which performance and the other was color and l missed that bus. i had hoped that the spool would compliment the the accents in the reel but not today
i may get a silver wolf spool and see how i like it in a reel
