For a while now I’ve actually enjoyed fishing with multi piece rods. I grew up fishing with multi sectioned bamboo rods to telescopic ocean rods. I started buying mid split rods because they were easy to store and it also seemed like I could get them cheaper in the states because people didn’t care for multi piece rods. So here’s a list of multi piece rods that I’ve used. I’ll rate them good 5 to bad 1. This is all my personal opinion and experience.

Daiwa BBB.
I’ve owned the ML 636 and really enjoyed it for flicking around smaller lures while bank beating or wading. The butt is pretty short and can be annoying. Rod is a bit heavy but it is a telescopic rod. For the price and ease of use and storage I want to give it a higher rating. But the sensitivity and overall feel of the rod makes me put it at a 2.

I currently own the 6106 MH one. I stumbled on to it and actually didn’t know that they made a MH version of the BBB. The rod initially felt good but the short butt stock really is a downer on this rod. The rod action is actually fairly good for the price. Good backbone and hook ups would be easier with a longer butt. Probably a rod I’ll keep for a while till I find something else that I like. The telescopic aspect is easy in the sense you can keep you line ran through it while it’s stored. So I give this rod a 2.5.

Daiwa Rebellion

I owned the 692 H which is a 6’9” center cut rod. I used it for small swimbaits and heavy jigs and even some conventional gear. The rod is made in China and feels cheap but it was a rod I was pretty impressed with. It was one of those rod where you get what you pay for. So I give it a 2.5.

Megabass Valkyrie WE

The 58ML was a fun rod. It was pretty versatile and a lot of fun to use in close quarters. Great rod for bank beating and could really handle just about any fish. I sold it to but a lighter rod and I kinda miss it. It was an easy rod to throw in my bag and go. Good backbone but also soft enough tip to throw lighter lures. So I give it a 4.

711XH I had for quite some time. I actually owned this rod twice. Lol the first time I bought it to replace the Rebellion as I was getting into big baits. The rod did well but definitely struggled to handle what it was rated for. Once I found its sweet spot it felt so good in my hands. A truly great travel rod. I even threw frogs, jigs, and other more conventional lures on this rod with ease. I eventually sold it after acquiring a WP slant bridge but the shortly after bought another because I did enjoy the travel size aspect. I give this rod a 4.

Megabass SS Cyclone. Owned it and never got to use it before a buddy asked for it so I sold it. Lol

I still need to include 3 Hyugas, racing condition , an Abu rod, black Themis, and my new Studio Composit rod once it arrives! Oh can’t forget my old Shakespeare rods. 🤣 jk

im falling asleep so I’ll list the rest later. But I will say out of all my multi piece rods the Hyuga 64L 2 piece rod is probably by far my favorite bfs rod I’ve owned to date. More on that later.

Great write up/info, bud.

I have pretty much always been a 1-piece/removable handle section guy, aside from a MB Salamandia (center split) rod I’ve had for a while. It has proven itself incredibly versatile, even being rated a H-powered stick.

That said… I recently acquired a group of five center split rods from a lesser known JDM manufacturer for review. I have to say that at their price point (34-40k JPY) build quality is quite nice and aesthetics are pleasing to my eye. I’m actually looking forward to trying them out and see what they’re capable of. More on this later. Thank you again for taking the time to line all these items out along with quick reviews/assessments.

Very cool.

I've always enjoyed 2-pc rods and keep a few in the lineup, stashed in the ride for those impromptu pull-off trips. I have a Falcon Lowrider 3-pc travel rod thats been great. It is no-frills and very utilitarian in looks. Performance though.....all I can say is wow! It is 7' MHMF, rated 1/4 to 3/4. It comes with a hard storage tube covered in nylon tent material and it is soft inside and divided to keep all 3 pieces separated. The top also zips open/closed. It isn't the lightest rod I've used, but very acceptable as a stash rod. I've thrown over 1 oz on it with no problem, though. It is a truly versatile rod and the sensitivity is above average. It isn't the lightest rod I've used, but very acceptable as a stash rod. I even landed a big bass on it last year with a buzzbait, way over 9 lbs.(I posted pics of that fish here on the forum.)

For the $100 I paid for it, I have been very pleased.

Awesome writeup, thanks for doing it!

X4 Cyclone Backpacker has served me well for squarebills, small buzzjet, etc pretty much anything in the 1/4 to 5/8 range.

Triza Dragoon has served me well thus far. Texas rigs and medium swimbaits like the claw 178 and TK. I wouldn’t go higher than 2ish oz on it though, even though it is rated up to 3 oz.

I also still have the Fenwick Methods travel rods - spinning and casting. They came with 2 tips each to cover all the most common weight ranges. Not the most “enthusiast” rods, but they were practical and always delivered when I needed them to.

Thought of you when this thread started, as you've mentioned the those "stash" combos many times in the past during our convos. Good stuff.

This is a great reminder that regret lasts longer than buyer's remorse 😉

So I’m sitting on the train on the way home from work. Gnarly thunderstorm so the train shuts down and we just wait.. I figured what better time than now to finish my little write up.

soo… to continue. I actually remembered that I forgot to add the Megabass Valkyrie WE Spinning 610 ML rod. It is currently the only spinning rod I own. I’m not much of a spinning guy and I bought it as I was taking a trip to the southern island of Japan and would possibly do some ocean fishing and I thought I better grab a spinning rod. Lol so I did. I ended up doing some ocean fishing with it and I genuinely enjoy it. It is a little short for ocean fishing but for bass or trout it’s pretty good. It’s an interesting rod as it is a little slow on action but likes a lighter lure. Lure rating is max 20g but I wouldn’t go passed 10g. That seems to be the sweet spot. A well build rod and definitely solid. I give it a 4 out of 5 as I think I would have liked it a little bit longer but for casting this is my preferred length.

Megabass Racing Condition WE 702MH. After purchasing a IP79 I thought I had to have this rod as it was a match made in heaven in my book. Definitely a nice rod. But my only gripe was how small the guides were. I don’t mind it on lighter actioned rods with thinner line diameter but on a MH it was almost annoying stringing the line through. I used it for a day of fishing and after that put it up because I had other rods that felt better suited for my technique and preference. 7’ is a little long for me in the MH game. I personally don’t like long rods either. So this one is truly preference. I ended up selling the set to a buddy after I sent him pictures to show him of my new whip. Lol I rate it a 4 of 5.

Megabass XXX Black Themis F2.5 6’7” center split. This rod was a fun rod to own. It fit the bill in power and back bone. Handles the lures well within its range. But, it was freaking heavy. I used this rod quite a bit but I couldn’t get passed how heavy it was. So I ended up selling it. I still think it’s a great rod but not for me. If you haven’t noticed I can be very picky. Lol I give this rod a 3.

Megabass Hyuga.. I’ve owned I’ve owned 6 in total and all 3 have been duplicates. Lol yes.. they are the dreaded pyrofail or the correct term pyrofil rods. These can be a hit or a miss and are known to snap. I haven’t had an issue yet and I believe for the price it’s an underdog in the game.

Hyuga 64L center split. Currently my favorite bfs rod. Either I haven’t experienced a good rod yet or this one is just that good. It has a soft enough tip to throw a Raid Japan two way cut in half and weightless on a trout hook about 15 yards. Add a micro mail weight to it and you’re looking at 25 yards. I throw micro cranks and so much more on the rods. I’ve caught solid bass and trout and I recommend it to any person willing to take the gamble on this rod. I give this one a 5/5 in my book. For a bfs rod that bass oriented it does its job to the fullest.

Hyuga 66ML 6 piece. My take away on this rod is it’s pretty soft for what I was expecting. And in the beginning it was a huge turn off but after selling it I knew I’d need it again. You’ve probably  noticed a pattern of me selling a bunch and regretting it. Lol the cycle of my life yet the freaking gems I don’t let go of. I also moved from the states to Japan and sold a ton of my stuff in anticipation of buying more when I got here. Enough of me and back to the rods. This rod is a great moving bait rod. I used it for trout and bass and had great success with no issues. It likes the lure weight to be on the lighter side and even 3/8oz feels a bit too heavy. A fun rod that easily packs away and it’s in my preferred length. For a ML it feels a little weak so it’s a 4/5.

Hyuga 611MH mid split. Just gonna say if you like jig fishing and need a mid split to keep in your car get this rod. It’s a freaking tank. I’ve had zero issues with it and I’ve set the hook hard. It feels great casts great and handles a wide range of lures. This rod is always with me. I sold it before moving back to Japan and it was the first rod I bought after arriving. 5/5 would recommend.

Abu Garcia eradicater bait finesse 704L. This was a pretty cool rod. Visually it was a stunning rod and I actually really enjoyed the handling. But for a light rod I felt it was just a bit long for my liking. For finesse rods I like them less than 6’8”. Purely preference but I’m also only 5’10” and it feels like the sweet spot. The guy I sold it to has seemed to have fallen in love with it. Lol so that speaks volume. I give it a 4/5.

Studio Composite Transworld 6’6” 5 power. I bought this rod off of the site here / Greg. I was looking for a rod like the Valkyrie WE 711XH but shorter. And he turned me on to a made in Japan rod. I’m a firm believer in voting with your money. I try my best not to buy made in china products. Yes, there are some good rods made in China but I’d rather invest in those investing in us. I don’t have anything to say about this rod as I don’t have it yet and it’s on its way so I will give a detailed report once I use it.

Thanks for reading this far for those of you that have. Lol now some pics of multi piece rods.

@gaijin

Fantastic short write-ups and descriptions!  Multi piece rods have come a LONG way since the 1980s Berkley and Shakespeare offerings...lol.

Thanks for sharing.
