What specifically are you wanting to know? It may be easier to categorize the bottom contact rod conversation into weight ranges such as 1/4 oz and less. 3/8 to 1/2 oz. 5/8 to 1 oz etc.

But if it was to be generalized meaning that one rod to rule them all for bottom contact and bottom contact alone give me a Luxxe Oltre. I know RISE and I vary and differe on where we fish, how we fish, the size of the fish present in our bodies of water and the overall lure weights we throw but that rod is very impressive with anything 3/8 oz and up to about 1 oz to me. The bit sensation is like any other rod I have used. It is just so electric and lively like there isn’t a doubt what just happened. It is something unlike any other rod I have used. I like my 70H so much that the Medium and Mh models really intrigued me to cover the entire lure weight spectrum

Thx for the reply kicker. Anything specific like top three rods in the weight ranges that you mentioned would be amazing.

I remember the oltre being mentioned as the most sensitive years back but that still holds true even with the release of rods like black raven extreme and poison ultima?

The problem is two fold. 1 finding someone that owns every high end bottom contact rod that is worthy of this discussion. And two putting any potential biases aside and having a fair evaluation of all contenders.

RISE is probably the only one qualified to do so. I myself couldn’t do so as I don’t have all the rods in question. So mine would be the best on what I have used in the past and what I currently own. And comparing rods that you have now to what you had in the past isn’t easy when you can’t fish them side by side. And also the ability to acquire some of these rare and long discounted rods would be a lengthy process unlike buying say a NRX rod and comparing it to a MB Phase 5 rod which are all still made and easy to acquire.

It is an interesting discussion no doubt and most will probably recommend things based on what they have read or heard and not actually from first hand use. So the discussion is really only valid if you have the same or similar input coming from multiple sources. For example we give 5 members on here the same 10 heavy bottom contact sticks to review for 6 months. We ask them to rank them in the order from most sensitive to least using the same exact reel line and lure. You start to tally up the rankings and such and look for similarities. At that point if the findings show some distinct difference or hierarchy then you could lay claims as to which rod or rods in certain power class are the most sensitive once all the other variables are controlled IE the user, the lure, lure weight, line, reel, lake and cover fished, fishing conditions like wind, etc.

As we all know there comes a point in time where you have to ask yourself is the rod comfortable, does it have the style I want, reel seat, components, and the sensitivity I need/desire. My X7 SE and Sedition Cristobal are some of the finest ML+ rated rods I have ever used. Is there something better out there? Perhaps, but these rods don’t leave me longing for more anything…

What you said makes complete sense. I would even venture to say that Rise might not have experience with everything out there, though I could be wrong haha.

To clarify, when I asked about the top 3 rods in each category, I was referring specifically to your personal experiences with the rods you've used and how you would rank them. I understand that everyone has different preferences based on how they handle their rod, the waters they fish, and other factors, but I think it's always interesting to hear different perspectives based on personal experiences. That’s really what I was looking for. Hopefully, that makes sense Smile

I will default to someone that actually fishes. I just stand on the boat dock flaunting my tackle for Instagram likes from the ladies.

A few favorites for me:

Luxxe Oltre B70H

NRX 873 CRR, 894 (I know, not JDM..)

Evergreen Black Raven Extreme (my absolute favorite for pitching 3/8 oz osp hunts jigs). It is  6’6” though so not for long distance dragging but great for picking targets apart.

Tried the USDM Steez Bottom Contact recently. I need more time with it but I wasn’t “wowed”.

The Oltre MH was “just ok” for me as a jig rod (my expectations were probably way off based on the H). It seems great for certain classes of treble baits but I got a lot in the stable for moving baits…

Welcome aboard @Steve_23! Great people people in here with a wealth of knowledge.

As for adding to the conversation…what are you looking for? Just a list of “greats” in the mentioned different weight ranges or something more specific?

I own/fish/have fished…let’s just say…wayyyy too many rods and more than half of the ones I own are bottom contact sticks. I’m throwing some form of bottom contact 75%-85% of the time I fish. It’s what I love doing. I keep adding more rods and looking for that next “better” stick in certain areas, but things…at least for now…have peaked. We are at a stage that if you need even more sensitivity than what’s available…I’d be surprised. That’s not to say that certain characteristics aren’t a factor, as they very much are and that’s the focus of my never-ending search for different things in this arena.

That said…There are so many variables, models, lengths, tapers, different sticks for different subcategories of bottom contact, etc. I sincerely deem it very difficult to list a top 3, as I have rods for specific jobs and rarely grab a “multitasker” unless I’m taking the kayak out, or shore-banging which are rare occasions.

Let me ask you. What 3-6 bottom contact baits are you most often throwing and in what conditions?

Thank you and yes sir! Word on the street is that you're the man when it comes to this topic. I'd love to hear your thoughts on each rod's sensitivity, taper, forgiveness (ability to keep fishies pinned), "IT" factor, balance etc

I know it's probably a lot to cover and type out so any input would be appreciated.

@steve_23 I revised my reply above after you responded, check it out and let’s dig deeper into this. Always happy to help if I can. Some specifics, as asked above will steer this in the right direction. 🍻🤙🏼

Here we go...

I typically fish in depths ranging from 5 to 10 feet, though occasionally I target 15 to 20 feet. For shallow banks, I prefer using a 1/8 to 1/4 oz shaky head with a trailer or a finesse jig. In deeper water, I switch to a 3/8 oz jika, free rig, or Texas rig with a trailer. When targeting even greater depths, I move up to 5/8 to 1 oz weights with the same techniques.

My current JDM setup is somewhat limited, and I'd like to expand into techniques I haven't explored yet or try rods that are highly recommended. My JDM arsenal includes the Keitech KTC 763, X-Bites, Olympic Vigore 7'5" M and 7'6" MH, the latest 7' MH Ultima, RSR, and the 7'4" XH Efreet.

I really wish they made a little brother version of the RSR. That rod is flat out nasty!

Barely! lol. I’ve had a rough patch of work travel combined with various minor but annoying illnesses that have kept me off the water and generally off the computer. Boat is now in storage (*sigh*) and looking forward to snowboarding season!!
