I have been fortunate to procure a mint with box and papers MB IS79 UC, granted it is still in the hands of USPS...
I am a bit perplexed why this reel was made with a 100 sized spool/Mag Z braking profile and such a tiny handle and then 7.9 gears, which I assume are the same brass set from the Steez EX100?
If the Steez EX100 7.9 has a ~ 100mm aluminum handle and same depth spool, what is the esoteric design purpose behind Yuki-Ito's IS79 UC?
I hope I like this reel well enough to keep it, whether stock form (unlikely), or I will mod the handle and spool to better meet my wants for other applications. I have a highly modded and tuned Steez Limited SV 105XH with Steez EX 7.9 brass gears and it sports a 102mm ZPI CF swept handle and serves many purpose of fast moving low resistance applications and even some mag-finesse presentations slow rolling Beetle Spin type lures in colder water (I like the 7.9 to keep up with fast moving current and running fish).
Just curious what others think and apply their IS79 UC for since it doesn't appear that many of these reels are in actual daily usage by many peeps?
Thanks in advance.
I fish two of mine, regularly. Bottom contact. Short handle is easier to turn more rapidly/smaller circumference for rotation.
80mm is a bit short for some peeps, but I like em and use em, especially with quick line pick-up situations calling for high speed ratios. For “chuck and wind” apps, which I know you’re fond of, yes…a longer handle is more comfy and grants you a bit more leverage. If your intended purposes are of that, then swap the handle out, send me the 80mm Itö CF and everyone is happy, lol.

I would be open to using it for bottom contact but was thinking fast moving topwaters, which that might be just fine.
But yes Bruddah, I know you are very found of the factory Ito 80 mm handle/knob set. 😎
BTW, those are friggin' gorgeous combos and that chunk bass was hooked perfectly in that pic.
by far my favorite reel.. I have one called Johnny Cash.. I must have three or four around here with different personalities. I dont know what it is about this reel but i like it.
Haha, love it man..."Johnny Cash"!
What techs are you using yours for, Jorrick?
I have two on the two bottom contact I rods
one on Megabass Gen. One super destroyer
I dig the mismatched knobs, I did that for a bit myself for some flair... definitely not for the OCD afflicted, lol.
I paired it with a TKIC Super Stallion (thanks for helping me procure this rod Greg!) yesterday and tossed a 3/8 Dark Sleeper with 14lb Sufix Siege and was able to clearly pick up bites and land two rock bass, one of them decent sized as well. The combo handled well, and I confirmed that even a 1/2 oz spinnerbait with a size 3 Colorado and #4 willow is more resistance than what this 7.9 gearing and shorter 80 mm handle was designed for.
What other spools have you used in the IS79 UC? I dropped in the ZPI PG that I got from Jorrick and it feels pretty good...I'm hoping it'll make casting of jigs and plastics easier with heavier copoly/fluoro.

KTF Neo, ZPI 001, R+, Tuned SV 103….so many options.
