What is the consensus on when a rod bumps into the popcorn ceiling inside your home while you are handling it? Do you guys think it causes any real damage, or just bruises the enthusiast's ego?

The ego no doubt is bruised...on the rod too, gotta do some load tests to see if anything was really damaged. And then take it power fishing and get into a good bite.
Hopefully it's all good still.

No, no, no you're checking it wrong. In the event of mishap like this, the correct procedure is to thrust it back into the same ceiling again to check if compromised. Again and again and again until you're certain. Then you'll know.
