I have ALOT of these stashed away. Just started using them. Finding the right rod has been a challenge. What do you use for larger jerkbaits with larger hooks

Respectfully, those are only 5/8 oz you can likely work them on most appropriate sticks you would otherwise work half ounce with. While it is 25% disparity the difference amounts to a mere .125 oz. and while hydrodynamics equates additional resistance, the overall taper and length of most half ounce designated jerkbait sticks can probably handle it. It won’t feel the same, but just lean into it a little harder to compensate. Unless you rip exceptionally hard, or if your stick is maxed out, or if your line selection simply has too much stretch, you might find yourself surprised. That’s my advice, at least at first, until or if you decide to incorporate them as a mainstay approach. If so, then by all means get another assembly to master their use.

@goldrod do you prefer a longer or shorter rod for jerk baits?

@Rise 6’10”-7’0” is good for me

I have a custom rod that I have yet to find anything better but I try. I have the popular expride six ten medium

buti also have this pA six ten medium plus.

@Goodtimes,

thanks that was just what i needed to hear. I’m using these on my Poison Adrena six ten medium plus. I realized these lures slowly rise and from my research they were meant to be fished above grass. I want to use this rod for my pointer 100 so it’s been a learning process.

i was thinking about getting the new Steez 6’9” rod and pair it with my pixy airy red

but I said I’d use my x7 extreme mission in a pinch if I had to

I just want to say thank you all and that’s to the moderators because being able to post a picture from my cell phone is so much easier

Yup, figured you were on that proverbial fence. And I would bet your Expride does better than you think with it. For now at least. Interesting the intended purpose you mention, actually makes great sense to me, then take note you’ll incorporate slower overall retrieve cadence to account for extra time they need to get around or through vegetation to eat. Give it a go, you’ll probably be fine until you opt for that next step. Just double check your comfort of pulling them out foliage with it. And you might be on to something with your next choice. I wouldn’t know though. Site is still young, as you’re no doubt aware, much more coming eventually. Rise himself takes credit here though, it’s his baby. Glad you like it.

Even though it’s a bit shorter than what you’re preferences are, I’d like to suggest the Kaleido 6’9” Stallion DG tournament or the Stallion RS (if you like a slightly more parabolic stick for these duties). Both are outstanding for this application/bait/weight, IMO.

100% agree, I love the Magnums and fish them on the same rod I use my regular 110s on.  Ironically, I use an Orochi XXX oneten special that's 6'5. on a reel with BFS bearings spooled with 10lb floro (i have an extra spool of 9lb shooter I use during the winter) I have no issues fishing the magnum with it.  For me, I tend to believe that the USA market overworks there 110s and that you don't need the typical USA specked rods for jerkbaits.

I proved my theory last year when I fished the Susquehanna for river smallmouth and was ripping the x-120s around all day when success is dependent on how fast and erratic you work the bait and it performed great! handled the fish jumps and runs very well and I didn't have too much fatigue. the shorter option made life lot easier to jerk and reel at the same time.

I’m with you on shorter rods for tossing jerks. Even at 6’2” I love a 6’4” Jota Dorrum Stick Tune slant bridge for these duties. The shortest slant bridge MB made, makes for great twitching abilities with enough offset handle length on tap for when leverage is needed. Will also handle magnums with ease.

@rise I'm with that. For me 6'4" is spot on. Easy to utilize, less fatigue over time, more maneuverability to be creative, the list goes on.

Yet as we both know there is a contingent out there who feel they want/need length to work these things. I mention this specifically because I would LOVE to read more on the debate. I want to know why. And if applicable how.

Thing is, I can't say I've ever heard or read about that great 6'6"-6'7" jerkbait stick. It seems as if there is always a short vs long preference. For this, reason must exist and I kind of doubt it's simply a matter of taste type thing. Hopefully we can get some to chime in one way or the other
