Does anyone know of any after-market spool options for the J-Dream 7.9? And where one may locate these options?
I believe that this particular model has a 36mm spool.
Thank you TP!
Are you looking for a DIY style spool or other stock spools?
Not sure what I am looking for, tbh, mostly looking to see what the options are and looking to play and tinker, lol. If there are cool DIY mods, would love to hear about them. And stock options too. Thank you!!
I’ze PE Long Cast (Red)
IP68 Honeycomb
Zillion HLC
All very good options. Each very different in their characteristics, but fun.
Amazing, thank you!
Are these available anywhere or would we have to hunt high and low? I would assume the latter.
I have a stock HLC spool (there are two versions) in a J Dream and it’s amazing for over 1/2oz baits. It’s my favorite frog reel.
Another gem is a TDZ 100M spool. It’s a great all around spool. I had one in an Ian Shields tuned Type R that was outstanding. Find a R+ rotor/spring kit and really speed things up.
@blksheepfishing looks just like a standard 34mm gigas V-spool from a TD-Z, but is 36mm in diameter. An R+ inductor and spring swapped into it…is literally one of my favorite spools.
Is this spool good for long cast applications? And where is this type of spool found?
Thanks
J Dream was one of the Daiwa that really didn't require an aftermarket spool, unless you were looking to adjust line capacity.

It's a very good spool, but not exceptional IMO. My IP68L even with upgraded ZPI spool bearings was underwhelming for distance vs an HLC, and overall ease of casting/speed/distance vs either a 100M or especially the IP Honeycomb spool.
If you can locate an IP Honeycomb spool, it is amazing with just about any type line...just make sure to dial up the mag and NOT cast hard, this will overrun the spool and cause backlashing.
This AMO 36 mm was very surprising in my US Trail...casts down to 1/4 well and excellent with braid and is very fast. The bearing is Chinesium noisy and the spool pin is tapered akin to ones in the OEM Abu Revos (be aware in case you remove and reinstall the pin), but IMO an excellent value.

I was using the J Dream 7.x RR for a couple years until I made the "mistake" of trying the Steez 105 LTD, then the Zillion 10, then the Zillion 1000XH, then the Zillion HD (threw that into "R", put the arm over the passenger seat, looked back through the rear window) back to the Zillion 1000XH but the Steez A II caught my eye and I'm up to 3 of those now!
I'm champing at the bit for the Bluetooth IMZ ...
Apparently even the aftermarket ones are extremely hard to find or out of stock when looking at the Japanese sites...If anyone has one of these spools that they would consider selling please let me know. Otherwise I will just continue with the stock one at this time. Thanks
Yeah, I’m on the same side of the fence when it comes to not being a fan of the stock J-Dream and IP spools. Over-braked, leaving someone like myself that prefers a faster spool in general no choice but to tune the inductor or swap out spools altogether.
I haven’t tried the Amo spool, though I’ve heard the same thing from several people…”pleasantly surprised”….
