I’m having a rod built for big swimbaits, not the hard body ones. So I looked back to every rod I had built and thought about the things I liked and didn’t like about them.

what are some of yours

I prefer double footed guides, a longer forgrip and shorter overall length than typical swimbait industry options. I like 6'3-7'3 rods for many big bait applications.

Do you have them custom made or are there production swimbait rods in that length range?  Id definitely like a rod shorter than the 8' rods I have now.

@chrisg_sdcf  There isn't anything in production that I really like, Deps has a bunch of Huge Custom Options though that work well, I have 2 of them, one is a 3 piece travel rod, the other is a H3S-73RF, it does not have a swimbait butt... but still works fine and is easier to flip and pitch baits like a TK, cover glide.

I used to have a Wild Lures Prest 6'3 but it's a long butt rod and not very maneuverable for flipping and pitching. It's good for getting strong bait response to reeling action. But its so stiff I feel it's a bit too much for Treble hook baits.

It's not a JDM blank but Phenix has alot of options you can order and have cut down to your desired length. My next rod will be going this route, I think.  Whoever you go with, don't go to an amateur... Find someone who really understands the blanks. and what you can get away with.

Looks like I'm going to have to go custom.  Maybe a two piece rod.

How did you like the Deps 73? I found it to be too stiff for me (makes sense since it's XXX Heavy) which led to me selling it.

Always learning...

@pkn8  I didn't think it was stiff at all, in fact I feel like I could throw a chatter bait on it, as well as a K9.  Its soft on the top end.  I was actually surprised at how soft it was given its supposed to be rated the same as the 8'1 XXX that was made to throw the 250.
