Hello to all, looking for some help in choosing a true Japan made rod. I had been eyeing up a rod for quite awhile and recently pulled the trigger on ordering it from Asian Portal, but found myself feeling a bit disappointed to find a made in China sticker on it... While that rod is quite impressive I was wanting to own a true made in Japan rod. This time I think I've done my research a little better and I'm wondering if I can get some direction towards the purchase of another rod.
I fish from a kayak and have limited room so I value versatility. My current most used rod for everything is my Shimano Zodias 610MH (not the JDM rod I ordered) I'm looking to find something similar-ish... just with the true Japan made quality and craftmanship.
What I'd like to be able to fish is pitching 3/8 oz compact tungsten jigs, 1/4 oz Texas rigs, 1/4 swim jig w trailer, 3/8 spinnerbait w/ and w/o trailer, 3/8 oz jackhammer w trailer.
My short list of rods I guess I'll just list... understanding though the rods I really like is the Luxxe Efreet series (I just can't seem to get over the length of the rod I'll list)
Luxxe Efreet 64MHR
Poison Glorious 610M
Poison Glorious 610MH
Evergreen Cobra GT 66M
Evergreen Stallion GT 69MH
Sorry for the long winded post... any input would be appreciated as I can't determine if a medium will work for me or not as I have a different rod I use for heavy cover and I live in WI so true giants aren't here. Looking back in my rod purchases over the years I tend to choose the heavier powered rod as the Shimano Zodias I mentioned is rated 3/8-1oz and I never go over a 3/8 oz lure.
Thanks!
First and foremost, if it does not say "MADE IN JAPAN" on the rod, then it is not a true JDM stick. Often times all the components are made in Japan, but assembled elsewhere (Megabass, Shimano/Poison, I am looking at you).
What model year Poison Glorious are you looking at?
I have the 2016 PG Hyper Approach, 2 actually, 1 is for sale:

If nothing else you can see some good images of it, in case that is the model year you are considering. Let me know if you want additional pics, I can post those if you want to see more of the rod's details and styling. (hint, it is truly GLORIOUS)
I have owned a few Poison Glorious rods and I think you would be happy with the 610MH. It has that crispy, twitchy feeling and is definitely meant for slightly heavier applications. I also have the original JPG Rushburn, and it is listed as a heavy action rod. Yet, I can fish Texas-rigs, medium sized cranks (DD14), buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, and some larger topwaters. It is highly versatile and handles large fish well. My biggest on it is 8lbs. and it handled that fish like a champ.
design everything_
@triple_illusion I would be looking at the 21 version of either the 610 M or MH Poison Glorious. Thank you for the suggestion of your Hyper Approach my buddy has one and it is certainly a beautiful stick.
My understanding is the Luxxe Efreet models are made in Japan. I also understand this to be true about the Evergreen models I listed. For the 21 Poison Glorious I did read a post saying they were made in Japan, but that was the only place I could confirm that.
I would love to see the Made in Japan label on whatever rod I do end up going with.
If you don't mind...Need to ask before I can offer any input…
Will you be using a trailer on the smaller profile tungsten jigs?..if so which one(s)
What plastics are you planing to toss behind that 1/4 oz T-rig weight?
Considering ordering in the next couple days. Right now I’m leaning towards the Luxxe Efreet 64MH.
I had been searching on IG for any JPN users of the Efreet 64MH and found one guy who seems to use it for many of the purposes I listed. Still wrestling with the length though.
@birdman2136 Sorry for the delay in responding, as I’ve been on vacation. Not sure if you already picked something up but I’ll go ahead and comment.
Early on I was always concerned with capabilities of shorter length rods, but it quickly became clear to me that taper and Power are sometimes much more important than length…at least in my eyes. A shorter rod with a true fast/x fast taper will fish “longer” in hand being that you get into that backbone more quickly. That lack of fast taper in a shorter stick can also be addressed/compensated for with more power on a slower tapered stick. So a MH-powered rod with a true fast taper will be matched by a H-powered Med/fast stick most of the time. I fish many shorter rods and have zero complaints about them as long as they’re utilized for the right applications/situation.
As for your list/needs…
I’m not one to buy rods for versatility as I usually employ each of mine for specific apps/situations, but I’ve had hundreds of JDM rods come through my grimy little hands.
I believe the Stallion GT and Cobra GT won’t have the power you’ll need for jigs and T-rigs but the stallion would serve you very well for the other intended purposes.
My suggestion would be the OG Stallion DG Tournament, which would work well in close quarters/short range, but not for longer distance casts with the jig, IMO. At 6’9”…It’s a true MH with a “versatile” med-fast taper that’s got a bit more power behind it than the GT/TG1100 blanks which tend to be a bit lighter/softer in power than the older Kaleido blanks.
PG 610MH might be a contender but I don’t own it. I do own the 21 PG 170H and I’m a big fan of it. It’s a perfect example of thats slower taper with great power and sensitivity. 610 MH looks capable on paper and…Could be a winner.
I only own Oltres, so I unfortunately can’t offer info on the Efreet, but given the quality of the Luxxe Oltres, I feel strongly that you wouldn’t be dissatisfied.
I don’t think a Med powered rod will fit the bill, though. You’ll need every bit of MH for those jigs.
Hope this helps in some way.
I ended up picking up the Efreet 64MH and paired it with a Daiwa Zillion. The combo for me is so light and a pleasure to fish.
I spend most of my time chasing river smallies in WI and have caught some great fish with it already.
I decided not to peg any techniques to it and just roll with it. So far a 2.5” tube in a 1/4 oz tube jig has been great! I’ve also played with 1/4 ball head jigs and various sizes of paddles tails which have been great as well.
I did spend one day pitching a 3/8 oz compact tungsten jig made by Beast Coast called the lil magnum and it handled that really well.
it’s labeled as a MH regular but I’d call it regular fast. I love it enough I’m considering a 2nd and then onto a PG610MH down the road.
Take care
